Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi is set to make his return to competitive cricket after being released from the national squad for the series-deciding second Test against Bangladesh earlier this month. The 24-year-old is currently slated to lead the Lions team in the forthcoming 2024 edition of Pakistan’s Champions One-Day Cup.

Speaking with the reporters a couple of days prior to the launch of the tournament, Afridi said that he is looking forward to the “thrilling experience” that awaits him, and backed himself to deliver the goods with both bat and ball.

Shaheen Afridi will lead the Lions team in the Champions One-Day Cup 2024 season. Emphasizing his responsibility after becoming one of the five captains of the tournament, Afridi claimed that leading Lions will be a ‘thrilling experience’ for him considering the high-stakes nature of the competition.

He added that he is looking forward into putting his best foot forward with both bat and ball as a player as well as a captain. He said:

“Leading the Lions will be a thrilling experience for me, especially given the high stakes of the Champions One-Day Cup and the presence of several young and exciting players on our roster. I look forward to giving my best to the team — with the ball, the bat, and through my leadership throughout the tournament.”

Shaheen Afridi further recalled his Champions One-Day Cup debut back from 2018 when he was 18 years old. He added:

“I have great memories of playing the One-Day Cup in Faisalabad as an 18-year-old in 2018. Returning here as captain with a wealth of international experience feels surreal. I’m committed to helping create memorable experiences for all the young players on our team.”

Apart from Shaheen Afridi, the Lions team also features the likes of fellow international Pakistan stars like Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq and Khushdil Shah. While the Pakistan Champions One-Day Cup 2024 season will launch on September 12, the Lions will play their opening game of the tournament the following day at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
