Smaran Ravichandran isn’t just another name on the team sheet anymore, he’s the talk of Karnataka cricket these days. If you’ve been following the Ranji Trophy or the Vijay Hazare Trophy, you’ve probably heard his name doing the rounds.

And why not? The 21-year-old from Karnataka has been batting like a dream, putting up stunning performances. His double century against Punjab in the Ranji Trophy on Friday is just the latest feather in his cap. But who exactly is Smaran Ravichandran? Let’s take a closer look.

Who Is Smaran Ravichandran?

Smaran’s journey into the cricketing world hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. He didn’t walk into the Karnataka senior team on his first try—far from it. After facing multiple snubs, many would have thrown in the towel. However, not Smaran. Instead, he went back to the drawing board, worked his socks off, and came back stronger.

His breakthrough came during the CK Nayudu Trophy, where he smashed a whopping 829 runs ans left everyone everyone wide-eyed. It was the kind of performance that made people sit up and take notice. And just when you thought he was a one-hit wonder, he stepped onto the big stage in the Maharaja T20 Trophy where he delivered a stunning unbeaten 104.

Furthermore, Smaran truly announced his arrival during the 2024/25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Not just content with making it to the Karnataka squad, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands. In the final, he pulled out all the stops and smashed a century that played a crucial role in Karnataka lifting the trophy.

If the Vijay Hazare Trophy was his calling card, his latest heroics in the Ranji Trophy have been the icing on the cake. Playing against Punjab at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Smaran lit up Day 2 with an innings that can only be described as a masterclass. His 203 off 277 balls filled with 25 boundaries and 3 sixes was the stuff of dreams.

Smaran walked into bat when Karnataka was already in a strong position, but he didn’t rest on his laurels. He built his innings brick by brick. By tea on Day 2, Karnataka had piled up 420/7, with Smaran’s double ton as the highlight.

Karnataka's Day 1 Dominance

Let’s not forget how Karnataka set the stage for Smaran’s heroics. The bowlers were on fire, skittling Punjab out for a paltry 55 runs on Day 1. Smaran then took charge with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 83 off 100 balls by stumps on Day 1.

At just 21, Smaran Ravichandran has already shown he’s got the goods to shine at the highest level. In five first-class matches, nine List A games, and seven T20s, he’s piled up over 600 runs, including three centuries. His ability to rise to the occasion, whether it’s in a domestic one-day final or the heat of the Ranji Trophy, speaks volumes about his temperament.
