Experienced domestic spinner Shams Mulani on Sunday (March 24) realised his longstanding dream of making his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut with the earnest cricketer handed over his maiden cap by Mumbai Indians (MI) against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad.

The 27-year-old left-arm spinner, who has been a prolific wicket-taker in first-class cricket in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, finally kickstarted his career even in the toughest T20 league when he got handed his maiden opportunity to represent the Hardik Pandya led side.

Part of the MI set-up since IPL 2023, Mulani had warmed the bench throughout the previous year's campaign. However, the dawn of the new era in the franchise's journey with new skipper Pandya coming on board also proved to be transformative in the player's life.

Who Is Shams Mulani?

Renowned for his skillful and incisive ways in first-class cricket where he was highly influential in Mumbai's recent run to lift the coveted Ranji Trophy, Mulani has also been an understated but impactful bowler in List A and T20 cricket for the Indian domestic powerhouse.

Making his senior competitive debut during the 2018-19 season, the Raigad-born cricketer has enjoyed a rapid rise since, taking 180 wickets in 38 first-class matches at an average of 23.23 while also bagging 82 scalps in 55 List A games at 28.00 apiece.

But it is his T20 feats that propelled Mulani into the reckoning for MI, with the steady left-armer excelling in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20. The new MI recruit has taken 52 wickets in his 42 outings in the National T20 championship at a terrific economy rate of 6.55.

Mulani was purchased at the IPL 2023 auction for a sum of INR 20 lakhs before being retained by the five-time winners, who would be hoping the talented cricketer brings his A game to the fore in the fresh season.
