Jasprit Bumrah made his Test debut in 2018 and that same year, he finished as India's leading wicket taker in the red-ball format, with 48 wickets in just nine matches at an average of 21.02 with three five-wicket hauls.
However, in a Test match against Australia in Australia that same year, one of spells bowled by Bumrah received criticism, and also made skipper Virat Kohli angry about it.
Ishant Sharma, who was also a part of the team on that tour, recalled an old-incident, when he stopped Kohli from having a word with Bumrah after the bowler bowled a one-off poor spell.
"I knew a day would come when Bumrah would become a leader. I remember in 2018, when we were playing a Test match in Australia and his first spell did not go well. Virat told me ‘I think I should go and speak to him’. I said ‘ He is a very smart bowler. He understands it. Usko chhor de. Usko pata hai kya karna, kya nehi karna (Leave him alone. He knows what he needs to do).
In that way he is very smart. He understands the game and he understands the situation.' When you understand the situation, especially in Test cricket, you can make a comeback very quickly,” the veteran bowler told Cricbuzz.
Sharma's instincts proved right, as Bumrah ended the series with 21 wickets in four matches, including a five-wicket haul.
Indian cricket team's tour of Australia in 2018-19 was a significant and historic series. The Indian team, led by Virat Kohli, won the Test series 2-1, and were also victorious in the ODI leg.
As thought by Ishant Sharma long ago, Bumrah did end up becoming the leader of the Indian Team, albeit in the T20I format. He is currently leading the team in a three-match T20I series against Ireland.
