The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup yesterday. Suryakumar Yadav, whose returns in the 50-over format have been below ordinary, has also been named in the squad. There have been questions on Yadav's inclusion in the squad, but former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has given his support to the decision of having the middle order batsman in the team.

According to Gambhir, the impact which a player like Yadav, who has been playing competitive cricket, especially the IPL, for years now, is the reason why he has made it to the squad despite inconsistent performances in ODIs.

Gambhir also said that how the players perform in the Asia Cup will give the management a better picture of the team they can select for the World Cup.

"A good thing the selectors have done is picked Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Because Suryakumar Yadav may not have the consistency, but he has the impact, and the team management should find the most efficient way to use him,” Gautam Gambhir said while speaking exclusively to Star Sports on ‘Selection Day’ show on Monday.

“So, in my opinion, whether it’s KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer or anybody, we will look at their form after the Asia Cup 2023 and which team plays in the Australia series. That series will determine who plays in the World Cup rather than deciding after the series is over that who will play in the World Cup. Because there should be a series before the World Cup where your main squad plays together."

While he is currently the world's number one ranked batsman in the shortest format, Yadav hasn't really been able to get going on ODIs. The right-handed batsman has played 26 ODIs so far, from which he has a batting average of 24.33. In the shortest format, he has an average of 46.02 and a strike rate of 172.70 from 53 matches.
