As the anticipation for World Cup 2023 this October and November builds, all eyes are on this strong partnership at the top. In their brief stint together, Gill and Rohit have amped up their synergy, amassing a striking 685 runs across nine ODIs.

The dynamic duo could very well be the linchpin of India's aspiration to recreate the magic of the 2011 World Cup.

While speaking to ICC, Gill expressed his satisfaction at opening with Rohit, highlighting that the spotlight is on the Indian captain. He mentioned that Rohit encourages fellow batters to freely showcase their style of play without restrictions, allowing them to express themselves fully on the field.

“It feels great to be able to open with him, especially knowing that all the focus is on him. He's someone who likes the other batters to go and just express himself and play the way I want to play the game. So in that nature, he gives the players full freedom for how they want to express their game,” said Gill.

Out of their eight opening partnerships, the duo has notched fifty-plus scores in six instances. Notable among these was their partnership of 143 against Sri Lanka in Guwahati, along with a substantial 212-run partnership against New Zealand in Indore earlier in the same year.

In discussing their contrasting approaches to the game, Gill pointed out that Rohit tends to target different areas for scoring compared to himself.

He noted that the Indian captain favours playing lofted shots during the Powerplay, whereas his game revolves around identifying gaps and securing boundaries. According to the prodigious opener, this unique combination of approaches appears to yield positive outcomes for the duo.

“I think because his (Rohit’s) targeted areas are a bit different (to mine). He loves to go aerial in the Powerplay. And I'm someone who likes to find the gaps and keep getting those boundaries, and he’s someone who likes to hit sixes. So I think that combination works well,” added the 23-year-old.
