When Gill shocked his India captain (X.com)
Shubman Gill has happy memories of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 against Australia at his favourite Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad as the elegant young opener struck a brilliant century for India.
The 24-year-old produced a delightful knock of 128 off 235 deliveries, making great use of a flat batting surface after seeing Australia compile a massive 480 all out in the first innings. It was the talented right-hander's second Test century for India and first ever on home shores.
Apart from his magnificent innings, Gill can recall the Ahmedabad Test versus the arch-rivals for a cheeky moment where he amusingly left skipper and veteran opening partner Rohit Sharma shocked with a massive final-over six.
When Gill Left Rohit In Shock
The incident is from Day 2 of the drawn five-day fixture where Indian openers had to negotiate a tricky little 10-over phase before the close of play. Defense and patience were critical for both the players to survive till stumps but Gill decided to give a Nathan Lyon off-spinner the full monte.
As the great tweaker landed one near Gill's arc in expectation of finding some turn and bite, the Indian opener decided to hit him over his head for a massive six. Since the Punjab batter has a longstanding strength against the off-spinners, the six didn't surprise Gill's admirers.
However, the context of the final over in the day's play certainly left the man at the other end in shock and utter disbelief at his young teammate's bravery and courage.
"He (Rohit) was surprised. But I told him that's my shot. If an off-spinner is bowling on a good wicket, like the one we are playing on and the field was up to me," Gill told the reporters after stumps.
"I thought that was my shot and I was confident that I would hit for a boundary," he added.
