On this day, two decades ago, former Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag etched his name in history books, becoming the first Indian batter to score a triple century. This significant feat not only shattered records but also broke new ground, laying down a marker for future generations.

In a display of sheer dominance and unrestrained aggression, Sehwag's innings became a turning point, not just in the match but in the perception of what was possible in the modern game of cricket.

Virender Sehwag's 309 vs Pakistan redefined Indian cricket

The venue was the Multan Cricket Stadium, often referred to as the "City of Saints," where India faced off against Pakistan in the first Test match that was part of a historic series.

This series was imbued with the weight of geopolitical rivalries and a thirst for cricketing supremacy. Team Indian was being led by stand-in captain Rahul Dravid, in the absence of Sourav Ganguly

Into this tense atmosphere stepped Virender Sehwag, a batter known for his fearless approach and disdain for the textbook cricketing manual.

Sehwag's innings began in a manner typical of the man himself, with boundaries that flowed from his bat as if he was swatting away the pressures and expectations. By stumps on the opening day, India had amassed a formidable 356/2, with Sehwag at the helm, unbeaten on 228 runs.

On the second day, Virender Sehwag's bat spoke louder and bolder as he marched towards the triple-century mark, a feat no other Indian had achieved before in Test cricket. The moment of glory arrived when Sehwag, batting on 295, faced Saqlain Mushtaq.

With the audacity that only Sehwag could muster, he dispatched the ball over the boundary for a massive six, breaching the 300-run mark and etching his name in the history books. This was the highest individual score by an Indian batter against Pakistan in their own den, breaking the previous record of 218 runs set by Sanjay Manjrekar in Lahore, 1989.

Virender Sehwag's epic innings of 309 runs finally came to a close when he was dismissed by Mohammad Sami, ending a sublime knock that had the world in awe. His dismissal, after smashing 39 boundaries and six maximums across 375 balls, marked the end of an era-defining performance.
