India’s prodigious youngster, Prithvi Shaw’s celebrating his 25th birthday today, and it’s the perfect time to look back at the day he burst onto the Test scene in style. In October 2018, an 18-year-old Shaw took the cricket world by surprise with a cracking century on his Test debut against the West Indies in Rajkot. He was young, fearless, and played like he owned the pitch.
Prithvi Shaw Created History with a Dazzling Debut Century
Scoring a century on debut is no small feat, but Prithvi Shaw didn’t just do it—he did it fast. Reaching his hundred in just 99 balls, he scored the third-quickest debut ton, joining a legendary list of Indian cricketers who also hit centuries in their first Test.
We’re talking big names like Sourav Ganguly, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Virender Sehwag. Shaw’s fearless 134 off 154 balls was packed with 19 fours, putting him in an elite club from the get-go.
Records Tumbled
At 18 years and 329 days, Shaw became India’s youngest debut centurion and the seventh-youngest in Test history. And if that wasn’t enough, he was the second-youngest Indian to hit a Test ton, right after Sachin Tendulkar.
Shaw played his natural game, attacking the West Indies bowlers without a second thought. India’s score climbed to a massive 649/9, leaving the West Indies with an uphill battle.
India's Win and Man of the Match
West Indies never really stood a chance. Bowled out for 181 and 196, they lost by an innings and 272 runs. Shaw’s fearless batting earned him the Man of the Match award, and his debut performance was the talk of the town.
Though Shaw’s career has hit a few bumps since, that debut century will always remind fans of his talent. Here’s to hoping he finds that spark again and brings back the fearless shots that wowed everyone in Rajkot.
