A besieged Punjab Kings unit is set to host fellow IPL 2024 strugglers Mumbai Indians in match number 33 of the competition on April 18. The much-awaited contest, set to be staged at Mullanpur, marks the seventh respective league fixture for the two sides this season

Both Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians recently coped demoralising defeats last weekend, at the hands of table-toppers Rajasthan Royals and defending champions CSK respectively. With just two wins to their credit from six league fixtures each, the two teams find themselves occupying the bottom three rungs on the 10-team IPL 2024 points table.

When PBKS Faced Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023

Punjab Kings hosted Mumbai Indians on May 3, 2023 during the business end of the IPL 2023 season at Mohali. After visiting captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first, Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan and number three Matthew Short charted fluent knocks at the top to overcome the early dismissal of opener Prabhsimran Singh.

Liam Livingstone at number three defied the rest of Mumbai Indians attack with a sizzling 42-ball 82*, and shared an unbroken 119-run partnership with wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma (49* off 27 balls). Livingstone and Sharma’s burgeoning mindset with the bat ensured that Punjab Kings reached a staggering 214-3 by the completion of their 20 overs.

Chasing 215 for a win, Mumbai Indians captain and opener Rohit Sharma was removed for a duck by PBKS seamer Rishi Dhawan. However, Rohit’s early dismissal made little-to-no difference as Ishan Kishan whacked a 41-ball 75 at the top to set up Mumbai Indians’ response in the chase.

Kishan pounded seven boundaries and four sixes in his run-chase masterclass, and shared a match-winning 116-run partnership with fellow half-centurion Suryakumar Yadav. The latter of the two cricketers himself listed 66 off just 31, with both taking a special liking to Arshdeep Singh (1-66 in 3.5 overs).

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav’s batting blitzkriegs, coupled with 10-ball unbeaten cameos from Tim David and Tilak Varma ensured Mumbai Indians romped past the Punjab Kings total with a ball and six wickets to spare.
