Days after India’s stunning victory over South Africa to clinch the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on June 29, an old video of Gautam Gambhir from November 2020 has resurfaced on the internet.

In the video, Gambhir passionately supports and advocates for Rohit Sharma to be made India's full-time white-ball skipper.

In 2020, Gautam Gambhir emphasized that it would be a "shame" and a significant loss for Indian cricket if Rohit Sharma wasn’t considered for the white-ball captaincy.

At the time, Rohit had just led Mumbai Indians to their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title, defeating Delhi Capitals by five wickets.

Gambhir highlighted Rohit’s exceptional leadership, stating that a captain should be judged by consistent benchmarks, during his interview with ESPNcricinfo

“If Rohit Sharma doesn’t become India’s captain, it’s their loss, not Rohit’s. Rohit has led his team to five IPL titles. Going forward, it’ll be a shame if he doesn’t get India’s white-ball or just T20 captaincy because he can’t do much more than this.

Under Rohit Sharma's tenure as captain, India also reached the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023.

Fast forward to the present, almost four years later, Rohit has led India to lift the T20 World Cup 2024, proving Gambhir’s prediction right.

Now, with India’s T20 World Cup triumph, Gautam Gambhir is set to become India’s next head coach following Rahul Dravid’s retirement.

The cricketing world is eager to see the duo of Gambhir and Rohit working together to aim for victory in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.
