Brief Scores: Pakistan (1st innings): 313 all out (77.1 overs) [Mohammad Rizwan: 88 (103), Aamer Jamal: 82 (97); Pat Cummins 5/61 (18), Mitchell Marsh 1/27 (7)] lead Australia (1st innings): 6-0 (1 over) [David Warner: 6* (6)] by 307 runs.

Pakistan overcame their top-order jitters with a remarkable rearguard resistance on Day 1 of the third Test of their three-match series at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Rizwan, Jamal half-centuries extend PAK to 313

Pakistan lost both their openers, Abdullah Shafique and debutant Saim Ayub, for ducks at the hands of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood after skipper Shan Masood decided to bat first.

Captain Masood and number four Babar Azam charted cautious runs to lead Pakistan’s short-lived recovery, while Mohammad Rizwan (88 from 103 balls) and Agha Salman (53 from 67 balls) listed aggressive half-centuries from their ends in the afternoon session.

Pat Cummins tore through Pakistan’s middle and lower order to bag his third straight five-wicket haul, while Starc packed Salman in one of his return spells. At 227-9, Aamer Jamal frustrated the Australians with a rebellious final-wicket partnership with Mir Hamza (7*).

The two cricketers added 86 runs for the last wicket from the subsequent 22 overs to take Pakistan past the 300-run mark at the brink of stumps.

Jamal produced his maiden Test half-century in the process as he bludgeoned four sixes and nine boundaries in his career-best 97-ball 82. The 27-year-old was holed out by Mitchell Starc off Nathan Lyon as Pakistan’s innings folded up for 313 in 77.1 overs.

Australia’s milestone man and outbound opener, David Warner, saw off the remaining six balls of the day to reach 6*. He will now resume hosts pursuit of another 307 runs alongside partner Usman Khawaja on Day 2.
