In 1985, a young Indian cricketer, Mohammad Azharuddin, marked his debut with a spectacular maiden Test hundred at Kolkata's Eden Gardens. Under the captaincy of Sunil Gavaskar, Azhar displayed impeccable wristwork and timing.

Choosing to bat after winning the toss, India faced early setbacks, losing the wickets of Gavaskar and Gaekwad at 35. However, the innings found stability with the partnership of Ravi Shastri and debutant Azharuddin.

The real spectacle unfolded on the third day when Azharuddin showcased his exquisite wristwork and timing, crafting a century that featured 110 runs off 322 deliveries, adorned with 10 boundaries.

Norman Cowans brought an end to this remarkable innings, dismissing Azharuddin, but not before he left an indelible mark on the cricketing canvas.

Shastri's resilience continued, batting throughout all five days to contribute 111 runs to India's imposing total of 437/7 (declared). The opposition, England, responded with a first-innings total of 276, succumbing to the bowling prowess of Shivlal Yadav and Chetan Sharma, who claimed four wickets each.

As the match progressed, India scored 29/1 in the second innings, and the Test concluded in a draw. Azharuddin's debut century not only signalled the emergence of a batting maestro but also hinted at the leadership qualities that would define his future role as one of India's most successful cricket captains.
