Australian batting stalwart, Steve Smith has always been a class apart; be it grinding out runs in Test cricket or pulling off the unthinkable in white-ball formats. The Australian talisman has built his career on playing the game his way and while bowlers have tried to tie him down, he has always found a way to break free.

As he called time on his ODI career after guiding Australia to the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final, cricket fans couldn’t help but rewind to some of his greatest white-ball moments. And one that still has jaws dropping is his ridiculous shot against Pakistan in the 2016 T20 World Cup.

Steve Smith’s Outrageous Shot Against Pakistan Left Everyone Stunned

If you thought Steve Smith’s batting style was unorthodox, this particular stroke was something straight out of a video game.

The Mohali pitch had seen big scores and Australia needed to make sure they posted a competitive total against a dangerous Pakistan side. Having opted to bat first, the Aussies didn’t have the best of starts as they lost early wickets. But as has been the case so many times, Smith took charge.

Partnering with Shane Watson, he stitched together a match-defining stand. Smith’s unbeaten 61 off 43 balls along with Watson’s quickfire 44 off 21, propelled Australia to 193/4. But more than the runs, it was one particular shot that had everyone watching rubbing their eyes in disbelief.

During the penultimate over of the innings. Australia were looking to pile on the runs, and Pakistan were desperately searching for a way to keep Smith quiet. Smith had been feasting on deliveries around middle and leg, so Pakistan’s plan was simple: bowl well outside off and force him to reach for the ball.

And that’s when Smith did something absolutely absurd. He took his guard outside the off-stump, leaving all three stumps visible. Wahab Riaz, following the team’s plan, went further outside off, thinking he had finally set the perfect trap.

But Smith had other ideas. Instead of letting the ball go or reaching out to drive, he shuffled even further to the off-side, bent his wrists, and whipped the ball to deep square leg for four- from a delivery that was nearly off the pitch.

Maxwell’s Laughter, Pakistan’s Helplessness

As the ball raced away to the boundary, Pakistan’s fielders could only watch in disbelief. From the dressing room, Glenn Maxwell burst into laughter, knowing fully well that this was peak Steve Smith: a batter who defies the coaching manual yet makes batting look effortless.

Twitter went berserk, fans couldn’t believe their eyes, and even Wahab Riaz had no answers. It was a moment that perfectly summed up why Smith is such a rare genius in cricket.

Chasing 194, Pakistan had Sharjeel Khan firing early, but the momentum didn’t last. Regular wickets meant that even Shoaib Malik’s late blitz (40 off 20 balls) wasn’t enough.

Australia sealed a 21-run victory, keeping their T20 World Cup hopes alive, and while Smith’s knock was superb, that one outrageous shot stole the headlines.
