Players who can retire after Steve Smith [Source; AP Photo]
Steve Smith, the stand-in Australian ODI captain made a shocking announcement on Wednesday as he announced his retirement from the format in a bid to give more chance to the youngsters. However, the veteran player will continue to play Tests and T20I cricket as he feels he can contribute in the other two formats.
The Champions Trophy 2025 could potentially bring in curtains for many international stars as a lot of them are heading towards twilight. Here are 3 big names, who could follow Smith's footsteps and could announce their retirement from the ODI format.
1) Rohit Sharma
Perhaps the best white-ball captain in the modern era, Rohit Sharma as the leader has been superb and has led from the front with his tactical brilliance.
However, injury, and form are not with the India captain as he struggled for runs in the ongoing competition and was also nursing a hamstring injury which affected his game in the New Zealand clash.
Rohit, 37, is not getting any younger and if India win the Champions Trophy 2025, he might bow out on a high, just like he did when India won the T20 World Cup last year. Plus, with the 50-over World Cup in 2027, Rohit might pass on the baton to a younger captain as well.
2) Glenn Maxwell
Maxwell performance in last few ODI series
Series | Runs | Average |
---|---|---|
ENG Vs AUS | 39 | 13 |
AUS Vs PAK | 16 | 5.33 |
SL Vs AUS | 1 | 1 |
Ever since the World Cup in 2023 ended, Glenn Maxwell has been woefully out of form in the ODIs. He struggled in England, averaging just 13, and the poor run continued in the home ODIs Vs Pakistan, where he only scored 16 runs at 5.33.
In the ongoing Champions Trophy, he played a match-winning knock Vs England, but couldn't do much in the knockouts Vs India as he was reckless in his batting approach. Aged 36, Maxwerll has also entered the twilight of his career and the Champions Trophy could potentially be his last ODI tournament.
3) Ravindra Jadeja
One of the fittest cricketers on the planet, but Ravindra Jadeja, recently stated that he is getting older and needs to take care of his body more, as compared to before.
He is 36 years old and just like Rohit, isn't getting any younger. The all-rounder surprised everyone by announcing his T20I retirement last year, and could do the same after the Champions Trophy to prolong his Test career.
