If you’re wondering whether Steve Smith has retired from all formats of cricket, the answer is no. The Australian star batter has only announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) on March 5. He will continue playing Test cricket and T20 Internationals (T20Is) for Australia.

Steve Smith confirmed his ODI retirement after Australia’s loss to India in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final in Dubai. The 35-year-old made the announcement to his teammates after the match.

Steve Smith's ODI Career

Throughout his ODI career, Smith played 170 matches, scoring 5800 runs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96. He registered 12 centuries and 35 fifties, with his highest individual score being 164 runs against New Zealand in 2016 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. His contributions were significant, making him the 12th highest run-scorer for Australia in the 50-over format.

Under his leadership, the team achieved several milestones, including series wins against England and India, securing the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, and winning a tri-series against South Africa and West Indies in 2016.

His final act as ODI captain came in the 2023-24 home summer, where he guided Australia to a 3-0 series sweep against West Indies.

What’s Next For Steve Smith?

Even though he has retired from ODIs, Smith is still an active cricketer. He will continue playing Test cricket, where he remains a key player for Australia. He will also be available for T20 Internationals, with a potential goal of playing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where T20 cricket will make its debut.
