A certified Sydney Thunder legend, and its current captain, David Warner once went up against them during the formative years of his BBL career. After clattering a 51-ball 102* to mark an explosive Thunder debut during the inaugural edition of the BBL back in 2011, the legendary opening batter transferred to Sydney Sixers for the following season.

Tasked to play just the first match for the Sixers in BBL 2012-13 before joining the Australian squad for the national home summer, Warner found himself crossing paths with his old Thunder colleagues at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

When David Warner graced Sixers’ magenta

Cross-city rivals Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder went up against each other in match two of the BBL 2012-13 season at the iconic SCG back in December 2012. Making his debut for the Sixers, legendary opener David Warner opened the innings with Nic Maddinson in a tricky chase of 144 from 20 overs.

In just the second over of the chase, Warner poked an outside off delivery from Chris Tremain to make his way back to the dugout for a three-ball duck, marking a stark contrast to his debut BBL century from the preceding inaugural edition of the competition.

Despite Warner’s early dismissal, Sydney Thunder went on to ace the chase courtesy of anchoring acts from then captain Brad Haddin and fellow Australian international Steve Smith.

As it turned out, the match went on to become David Warner’s first and only appearance for the Sydney Sixers, as he joined back the Thunder franchise for the following season in late-2013. The cricketer has since remained a Thunder loyalist, having played 18 of his 19 BBL games (to date) in their lime green jersey.
