The highly-anticipated Sydney derby is upon us as the two quality sides Sydney Sixers (SS) and Sydney Thunder (ST) will lock horns in the battle of the best at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 17th January from 1:45 PM IST in the ongoing Big Bash League 2024-25 in Match 37. With both teams already qualified for playoffs, knowing who finishes at the top of the table will be interesting.

Sydney Sixers

With six wins out of nine games and just two losses, the Sydney Sixers are at the pole position in the BBL, with 13 points to their name. They have been thoroughly professional throughout their campaign and now have been bolstered by the addition of Australian superstar Steve Smith into their side, who has been phenomenal in the last two games he has played.

In their previous game against the Adelaide Strikers, Sydney chased down the target of 183 with one ball to spare courtesy of Smith, who played a valuable 52-run knock. Apart from Smith, the other prominent names in the side are skipper Moises Henriques, Josh Philippe, and Lachlan Shaw, all of whom have been decent with the bat, while their bowling looks sorted with Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott and Todd Murphy.

Sydney Thunder

On the third place are Sydney Thunder with 11 points from nine games with five wins and three losses, ensuring that they play the knockouts. Led by charismatic David Warner, Thunder are fresh off a win against the Perth Scorchers in a one-sided where they bowled them out for 97 before putting up 158 on the board.

Young Sam Konstas was the star with the bat as he found the sweet spot and ended up scoring 53, whereas Tom Andrews, batting at 9, played a superb cameo of 37* from just 13 balls. In the bowling department, Chris Green was the star with superlative figures of 3/13, while Nathan McAndrew was brilliant with his spell of 2/21 and in addition to that, the rest of the others picked one each.

Sydney Cricket Ground - Pitch Report For Match 37 Of BBL 2024-25

The pitch at the iconic SCG favours the batters a lot more than the others, with high scores being easily chased here. Spinners get support as the match progresses with some amount of turn on offer. However, under lights, batting becomes a bit easier and chasing scores is not an issue with the ball nicely coming onto the bat. Moreover, the pacers will have to bowl tight lines to ensure they don't leak runs. The average first innings score here in T20s is 157, which can easily be surpassed if the pitch is decent. Therefore, the team winning the toss would like to bowl first here and chase the target down.

Top 3 Captain and Vice-Captain Choices For SIX vs THU

1. Steve Smith

Sensational Australian powerhouse Steve Smith is a no-brainer when it comes to picking him in the team and selecting him as the C/VC of the side. With just two matches played so far in this year's BBL, Smith has proved why he is still the beast in any format. On his return to Sixers this time, after a busy home season, the right-hander smashed a brilliant 121* against the Scorchers off just 64 balls at a strike rate of 189.06. In the next game, he continued his brilliant form and took his side home after playing a 52-run knock versus the Adelaide Strikers.

2. David Warner

Skipper of Sydney Thunder David Warner has been impressive in this season after retiring from international cricket sometime back. To put it from the record books, Warner is the highest run-getter in BBL 14 with 324 runs under his belt at an average of 54 while striking at 141.48 with three fifties to his name so far. The left-hander opens the innings, which gives him a great advantage to face more deliveries and, hence, score more runs.

3. Ben Dwarshuis

Sixers' pacer Ben Dwarshuis has been consistent with the ball this time, picking 12 wickets from eight games with his best figures of 4/32 coming against Brisbane Heat. Dwarshuis has chipped in with wickets at various stages for his side and, hence, helped them to secure wins. Apart from his bowling, he has managed to accumulate 100 runs, which is an indication that he is handy with the bat lower down and can play cameos when required.
