Hat-tricks are a rare feat in the world of cricket, and more so in the Test cricket, the ultimate form of the game with batters not in hurry to force the issue. So, whenever a Test hat-trick comes along, it is a special occasion and for India it was Harbhajan Singh back who achieved the historic feat back in 2001 against Australia at the iconic Eden Gardens.

It was the three-match Test series between the rampant Aussies and a young Indian team led by Sourav Ganguly. Steve Waugh's Australia came into the Test match with 16 consecutive wins and a dominating victory in the first Test and were favourites to clinch the second one as well.

They started well and were in a decent position at 252-4 in the first innings, but young Harbhajan with his crafty off-break got three big wickets on consecutive deliveries to put India back in the game.

He first trapped Ricky Ponting infront of the stumps and then on the very next ball, Adam Gilchrist met with the similar fate as the off-spinner varied his pace beautifully. Shane Warne was then caught at short fine leg on the next ball by Sadagoppan Ramesh and Harbhajan created history infront of a jam-packed crowd at Eden Gardens. India went onto win that game in a dramatic fashion after being made to follow-on and along with Laxman and Dravid, Harbhajan etched his name in history books.

Irfan Pathan And Jasprit Bumrah Joined Harbhajan Singh

After Harbhajan, Irfan Pathan became the next India to take a hat-trick in Test cricket and it was against Pakistan in 2006 at National Stadium Karachi. In recent times, Jasprit Bumrah joined that list with a hat-trick against West Indies at Sabina Park, Kingston in 2019.
