Team India will lock horns with hosts New Zealand in a three-match series starting Friday. Notably, Hardik Pandya and VVS Laxman have taken the reins from the regular skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid for this series.

Ahead of the first T20I in Wellington, coach VVS Laxman heaped praises on Hardik for his incredible leadership qualities. Laxman, who has represented India in 220 international matches, stressed that besides being a genius tactician, Hardik stays calm on the field, which is the hallmark of a great leader.

The legendary former batter also called it a huge achievement to win the IPL in the first attempt as a captain, which Hardik did for the Gujarat Titans last season.

Here's what Laxman stated

"I have spent a lot of time with him since the Ireland series, he is just not only tactically sound, but he is very calm on the field and that is something which is very important at the highest level,

"He is a fabulous leader. We have seen what he has done with Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Taking leadership in the first year of the franchise in the tournament, and winning the league is not a mean achievement."

Since India's World Cup debacle, many ex-cricketers have supported Hardik Pandya to lead the T20I team in the future. With Rohit Sharma unlikely to play for two more years, it seems to be a matter of time before the dynamic all-rounder officially takes charge.
