Sophie Devine, the fearsome all-rounder of New Zealand Women, made history in T20I cricket in February 2020. Against South Africa in the 4th T20I, she became the first player in T20Is to achieve five 50-plus scores in a row.
In that 4th T20I, South Africa elected to bowl first, and the White Ferns posted a formidable total of 171/2 in their 20 overs.
After losing opening partner Lauren Down early, Devine formed a record-breaking partnership with Suzie Bates.
When Sophie Devine set unprecedented standards in T20Is
Together, they added 142 runs for the second wicket, the highest second-wicket partnership in New Zealand women’s T20I history.
Sophie Devine’s innings was a masterclass. She slammed her maiden T20I hundred (105 off 65 balls), including 12 fours and 3 sixes. This century was only the second T20I century by a New Zealand woman cricketer, the first being Suzie Bates.
With that, Devine became the first cricketer, male or female, to hit 5 fifty-plus scores in a row in the T20I format. This incredible run of form saw her amass scores of 54*, 61, 77, and 105 in a mere four games, with the fifth 50 achieved in the same series.
In the process, she overcame cricket greats like India's past captain Mithali Raj, Brendon McCullum, and Chris Gayle, who earlier achieved four consecutive 50-plus scores in T20Is.
Her exploits not only locked up the series for New Zealand but also solidified her position as one of the most feared batters in the shortest of all forms.
Sophie Devine signs off after a legendary career
The White Ferns bid farewell to their legend Sophie Devine in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. The all-rounder ended her career with 3431 runs and 119 wickets in the WT20I format.
