On Thursday, October 23, India beat New Zealand by 53 runs to reach the semi-finals of the ongoing Women's World Cup 2025. The Women in Blue are having a troubling edition and were on the brink of elimination with three straight defeats before the New Zealand match.
However, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side registered a comfortable win in the rain-reduced game to take their points tally to six in six matches and qualify for the next stage along with South Africa, Australia, and England.
India pip New Zealand to qualify for Women's World Cup
However, the fans were left confused as to how did India women qualified despite New Zealand and both the Women in Blue having a game left in their belly. Notably, New Zealand and India can both end up on the same points after the group stage, which has left the fans confused.
Notably, India have their final group-stage match against Bangladesh, while New Zealand are all set to play England, and a win for them and a defeat for India means that they both end up on the same points, but then why did India qualify already? What do the ICC rules suggest?
What are the ICC rules?
Unlike other World Cups, the ongoing 2025 Women's World Cup doesn't take net run rate into consideration, and if two teams end up on the same points, then the team with higher wins in the ongoing edition goes through.

Thus, by this rule, India have already qualified despite the fact that New Zealand can equal them on points. Even if the white ferns manage to do so, then they have just two wins, while India have three wins already.
