The Indian side, looking to win back-to-back Champions Trophy titles, were crushed by their arch-nemesis Pakistan in the 2017 edition of the multilateral International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament. Thanks to Jasprit Bumrah's no-ball and Fakhar Zaman's scintillating century, India could never fight back into the game.
When Jasprit Bumrah Overstepped And Fakhar Zaman Rocked
The year was 2017, and India were playing Pakistan in yet another final, but this time in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy at the Kia Oval in London. In the group stage match between these two sides, India won comfortably over Pakistan, as, even after the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method, India registered a victory by 124 runs.
However, the fates changed completely in the finale of this tournament, where Pakistan batted first and were on the cusp of losing their first wicket in the fourth over.
Right-arm pacer Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Fakhar Zaman for just three as he edged one to the keeper, however, only to be called back by the umpires, as the right-arm pacer overstepped on this delivery. Zaman, who was almost on his way back, came back rushing to mark his crease once again.
Not only that, but he also went on to play one of the finest knocks in ICC Champions Trophy history, scoring 114 runs off 160 deliveries, with 12 boundaries and three maximums, as Pakistan registered a hefty score of 338 for four in their 50 overs.
While there were some decent contributions from Babar Azam (46) and Mohammad Hafeez (57), Azhar Ali (59) helped Pakistan put India under tremendous pressure.
India's Batting Lineup Crashed In The Finale Against Pakistan
Chasing a massive target of 339 for victory, India crashed badly, as they lost half their side for just 54, and couldn't save themselves from embarrassment. After this, Hardik Pandya's valiant 76 off 43 deliveries came before getting run out after a miscommunication with Ravindra Jadeja.
India were eventually bowled out for 158 in just 30.3 overs, as Pakistan stunned India with a massive victory by 180 runs, sealing their fate and lifting the Champions Trophy 2017 title. Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali were the pick of the bowlers, with three wickets apiece, as India could barely survive the fight in this knockout encounter.
To date, the dreaded Bumrah no-ball and Fakhar Zaman's century still haunt India, as this could have been a game-changing moment, but it was not to be, as Fakhar kept punishing the defending champions one after the other.
