Marcus Stoinis powered Australia to an easy win against Sri Lanka as hosts collect their opening points this T20 World Cup 2022. The all-rounder clubbed an unbeaten 59 off just 18 balls, and helped his side chase down the Sri Lankan total with more than three overs to spare.

After the match, Australian skipper Aaron Finch hailed Stoinis’ efforts with the bat, by describing his knock as an “incredible” one played with much intent.

Australian captain Aaron Finch expressed his excitement after registering a thumping win over Sri Lanka in Perth. The win marked their first of the tournament, after their opening defeat to New Zealand by 89 runs.

While Stoinis sank the Lankan attack with a rapid 59*, skipper Finch himself struggled to get going throughout the run-chase. The opener scored just 31*, despite facing 42 deliveries in the evening.

During the post-match presentation, the cricketer dissected his own sluggish knock with the bat, and praised the all-rounder for his run-chase heroics. Finch said:

“Yeah great to win, Probably happier. I just couldn't hit the ball, but Stoinis was good. We were good with the bat but could have done better with the ball. The ball wasn't nipping at the end but we could have restricted them for a little low.

"They were bowling at the hard length and it was getting tough for me to bat. But that's not an excuse. When you walk out to bat and have that intent, that is incredible [on Marcus Stoinis]. When you come out to bat and have the presence in the field, that's half the battle won. Yeah, it is always a great event, and we are looking forward to it.”
