Dawid Malan walked away with a series win for England and a ‘Player of the Series’ award for himself for his batting blitz against New Zealand mere weeks prior to the 2023 World Cup. The elegant left-handed batter notched up notable scores across all three ODI outings, thus finishing the series with 277 elegant runs to his name.

As Jos Buttler’s English troops brace themselves for their title-defence in India, here at OneCricket we look at some of the little-known facts about team’s World Cup 2023-bound star Malan.

Story about Dawid Malan

Born in London and raised in Paarl, Dawid Malan spent most of his junior cricketing career in South Africa.

Back in 2005, at a tender age of 18, Malan joined the Boland cricket club in South Africa where he made his first-class debut. Interestingly, his younger brother Charl Malan also played first-class matches in South Africa for Western Province and Northern Transvaal teams.

The following year, Dawid was roped in by Middlesex for England-based County Championship fixtures. The burly left-hander stayed at Middlesex for over a decade, and during his run with the club, the batting prodigy earned his first national cap for England through a T20I match in 2017 against none other than his childhood home South Africa.

A little over a month later, Malan also made his Test debut against the same opponents, and played his first ODI during England’s Pre-World Cup 2019 series against Ireland.

Meanwhile, after being registered for over a decade with Middlesex, the cricketer found a new County home at Yorkshire prior to the 2020 Championship season.

Amidst all his county and international commitments, he found time to freelance as a T20 expat in prominent leagues like PSL, BPL, Mzansi Super League, Big Bash League as well as Indian Premier League (IPL). Owing to his impressive white-ball numbers, he was also one of the biggest sought-after commodities for The Hundred, where he was roped in by Trent Rockets prior to the inaugural season.

Regarding his sporting influences, Malan has previously stated that he considers South African batting legends Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher as his heroes.
