An experimenting Indian team decided to test its bench strength in their final Super Four Asia Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh. Having already cemented their place in the tournament final, the ‘Men in Blue’ fell six runs short of their target while Bangladesh walked away with a consolation win to conclude their campaign.

Remarkably, Bangladesh’s thrilling win in Colombo also ensured that Pakistan finished the Super Four stage of the competition at the bottom of the points table. Earlier this week, the ‘Men in Green’ coped demoralising defeats at the hands of India and Sri Lanka to crash out of the Asia Cup 2023 race.

Regardless of their injury concerns and a slump in form, Pakistan seems to be basking on the glory of India’s dead-rubber defeat, at least as per legendary pacer Shoaib Akhtar.

Akhtar says India defeat a relief for Pakistan fans

Asia Cup 2023 final bound Team India rested the likes of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj from their match against Bangladesh. Captain Rohit Sharma himself confirmed after the match that the team management made the drastic changes by keeping World Cup 2023 preparations in mind.

Pakistan, who finished the competition at the bottom of the table owing to Bangladesh’s late insurgency, is apparently overjoyed by India’s defeat as per former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. The legendary speedster took to X (formerly Twitter) and added that the defeat was also a wake-up call for Team India ahead of the 2023 World Cup at home. He said:

“Finally, some relief for the the Pakistan fans, including me, that India have lost the game. Wake up call for India. You can’t take teams lightly after winning a few games.”

“India have lost the game, embarrassing loss. We can’t criticise too much. Bangladesh are here to play. People were criticising Pakistan, saying that they got beaten up. Sri Lanka are a good team. The same is the case with Bangladesh.”
