Sanju Samson has officially been traded to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from the Rajasthan Royals (RR). The IPL confirmed the big move on Saturday, announcing a swap deal involving two star players, Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja.
As part of the trade, RR will now have Ravindra Jadeja and England all-rounder Sam Curran, while CSK will welcome Sanju Samson ahead of the IPL retention deadline on November 15.
Notably, Samson has been a major part of the Royals setup since joining them in 2013 as a young and talented wicket-keeper batter. Over the years, he grew from a promising teenager into the captain of the team. He even led the pink team to the IPL final in 2022, though they couldn’t win the title.
Since becoming captain in 2021, Samson has become one of the most reliable and consistent performers in the league. He has crossed 4000 IPL runs and has three centuries to his name. Now that Samson is set to begin a new chapter with CSK, he leaves behind several records at RR, some of which may take years to break.
Most runs for Rajasthan Royals in IPL
Sanju Samson is the highest run-getter in the history of the Rajasthan Royals. Across 150 innings, he scored a total of 4219 runs, including three centuries. He has been the backbone of the team’s batting lineup for years.

While young star Yashasvi Jaiswal has the potential to challenge this record in the long run, it still won’t be easy. Samson’s consistency over more than a decade makes this one of the toughest records to break.
Samson took over the captaincy from Steve Smith ahead of the 2021 season. Since then, he has captained the team in 67 matches, winning 34 and losing 32, giving him a win percentage of 50.75%.

Notably, RR have had several legendary captains in the past, including Shane Warne, Rahul Dravid, Steve Smith, and Ajinkya Rahane, but none have led the side in as many matches as Samson. His leadership record is likely to stand strong for a long time.
Century on captaincy debut
One of Samson’s most unique and unforgettable records is scoring a century in his very first match as IPL captain. In the 2021 match against Punjab Kings, he smashed a brilliant 119 off 63 balls, making him the first and only player in IPL history to score a century on captaincy debut. This is a rare achievement and is extremely unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.
