India star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant made a memorable return to Test cricket after recovering from a foot fracture he suffered during the fourth Test against England in Manchester in July.
Fans were eager to see how he would perform after the injury, and Pant did not disappoint in the first match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The left-handed batter looked confident from the moment he walked in to bat and wasted no time showing that his aggressive style was still very much intact.

The highlight of his innings came on Day 2 of the match, during the 38th over of India’s first innings. Facing South African spinner Keshav Maharaj, Pant stepped down the pitch, connected cleanly, and sent the ball soaring over the long-off boundary for a massive six. This shot wasn’t just a crowd-pleaser; it also marked a major milestone.
Notably, it was Pant’s 91st six in Test cricket, making him the Indian player with the most sixes in the format. The hit also helped India cross the 100-run mark.
With this achievement, Pant surpassed legendary opener Virender Sehwag, who had held the record with 91 sixes. Pant has now moved to the top of the list of Indian big-hitters in Test cricket. The updated list is as follows:
Most 6s for India in Tests:
| Players | Sixes |
| Rishabh Pant | 91* |
| Virender Sehwag | 90 |
| Rohit Sharma | 88 |
| Ravindra Jadeja | 80 |
| MS Dhoni | 78 |
It is worth noting that Pant’s feat also places him seventh on the all-time global list for most Test sixes. England captain Ben Stokes currently leads the world list with 136 sixes.
Earlier in the match, South Africa struggled against India’s strong bowling attack. They were bowled out for just 159 runs in 55 overs. Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with a brilliant five-wicket haul, while Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj took two wickets each.
By the lunch break, India were 138 for 4 in 45 overs, putting themselves in a strong position.
