Chennai Super Kings finally got off the mark against the Gujarat Titans and defeated them by 15 runs in the first qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 on Tuesday, May 23, at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, sealing a direct entry to the finals of the tournament.

Gujarat Titans' decision to chase on the turning Chennai wicket turned out to be ill-fated, resulting in their first all-out collapse in two seasons. They could only manage a meager 157 runs while chasing a target of 173, ultimately getting bundled out in exactly 20 overs.

In the post-match press conference, captain, Hardik Pandya, stated that his team had a near-flawless performance and there is not much to delve into. However, he did express his disappointment over his bowlers conceding some extra runs while bowling first, something that they will work on before heading into the second qualifier.

“I think we were quite spot-on (with the ball), but we made basic errors and that cost us the game. The kind of bowlers we had, I felt we conceded 15 extra runs. A lot of things we did right. We bowled a couple of soft balls in between. We were executing our plans and then in between we gave some runs. I don't think we need to look much into it,”

Notably, Gujarat Titans will have another chance to reach the finals in the second qualifier, where they will go up against the winner of the eliminator match set to take place between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk on Wednesday, May 24.

“We have to play two days later, we have to play one more game to make sure we reach the final. Just focus on the things that we've done really well this season,”

Pandya showered immense accolades on MS Dhoni, hailing him as one of the finest leaders in the game. He further credited Dhoni for his game-changing bowling changes, highlighting how they were the determining factor in securing the match for his team.

"That's the beauty about him (Dhoni), with his mind and the way he uses the bowlers, he'll make sure that you'll feel like he's adding 10 runs. We kept losing wickets, he kept changing the bowlers, credit to him. Would be nice to meet him on Sunday. Regrets are not good in life.”
