Chennai Super Kings have had a satisfactory season thus far in IPL 2023, securing seven wins of their 13 matches. Unfortunately, one of their matches was abandoned due to rain. With 15 points, they are currently positioned second on the points table.

They are currently battling it out against the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. This match is of paramount significance for them as they need to win it not just to qualify for the playoffs but also to retain their second place on the points table.

Once again, their opening batters Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway have delivered a dazzling start for the team, just like they have been doing throughout the tournament. The duo have notched up well-deserved half-centuries and forged a partnership of 141 runs off just 87 balls.

Gaikwad etches name in history books

With this, Gaikwad has written his name in the record books by becoming the second most successful opener for the Chennai Super Kings in the history of the tournament, having scored 14 half-centuries so far for the team.

At the top of the list sits their former opener Faf du Plessis, who boasts 16 half-centuries to his name. Michael Hussey finds himself in the third position on this list, with 13 half-centuries to his name as an opener for the Chennai Super Kings.

Most 50-plus scores by a CSK Opener:

  • 16 - Faf du Plessis
  • 14 - Ruturaj Gaikwad
  • 13 - Michael Hussey

The Maharashtra batter has been in exceptional form this season, consistently performing at his best. He currently stands as the second highest run-scorer for Chennai Super Kings, accumulating 504 runs in 13 matches with a strike rate of around 148.

The success of the Super Kings this season can be largely credited to the outstanding opening performances by Conway and Gaikwad. The New Zealand batter, in particular, has emerged as the standout performer for the Men in Yellow, leading the run charts for CSK with 585 runs from 13 matches.
