Gujarat Titans all-rounder, Rahul Tewatia, has disclosed that he provided words of encouragement to teammate Yash Dayal, who was slammed for five successive sixes in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders. The southpaw advised the young left-arm seamer to work on his mistakes and wait for another opportunity to prove himself.

During Match 13 of IPL 2023 held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Kolkata Knight Riders required 28 runs to win off five balls when Rinku Singh delivered an astounding performance, smashing all five deliveries for maximums, leading his team to a sensational victory.

Following this event, Gujarat Titans decided to drop Dayal from the playing XI for their match against Punjab Kings on Thursday, which they won by six wickets.

Tewatia revealed his discussion with Dayal in the post-match press conference, stating that the young player should not feel downhearted and must continue to practice his game. He further urged him to work on his weaknesses and strive for another chance to display his abilities.

“When I spoke to him, I told him that you will feel low only if you allow yourself to do so. It’s was only one bad game. In this Gujarat Titans environment, no one will make you feel low. Practice what you could not execute and wait for your chance,” said Tewatia.

The Haryana based cricketer emphasised the possibility of a strong comeback and reassured Dayal of the support he would receive from his teammates, adding that he had an important role in Gujarat Titans' victorious campaign during IPL 2022. He said:

"You never know how strong the comeback can be. Last season, he was one of our main bowlers. He had a big role to play in us becoming champions. He was claiming wickets with the new ball and doing very well with the old ball as well. One match cannot change anything,” added the 29-year-old all-rounder.

Tewatia also acknowledged that the team's positive environment would prevent Dayal from feeling negative and that he must avoid overthinking the situation.

“The kind of environment we have at GT, I don’t think anyone would have even discussed it with him or offered sympathy to him. If he thinks a lot about it, only then negativity can creep in,” concluded Tewatia.

Dayal recorded an impressive performance during IPL 2022, claiming 11 wickets in nine matches with an average of 26.91 and a strike rate of 17.45. The team will be hoping that he will recover from the setback and continue to deliver his best performances for their upcoming games whenever he gets the opportunity.
