The Duleep Trophy 2024 season kicked-off on September 5 with two high-profile fixtures in Bengaluru and Anantapur, respectively. The ongoing tournament features a slew of Indian international stars, as they collectively gear up for hectic Test ventures against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia.

While Duleep Trophy 2024 season serves as a dress rehearsal for several senior members across all four competing teams, the tournament generally remains one of the most prestigious first-class platforms for young emerging talents.

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni once received a call-up to play for the East Zone back during the 2001 season. However, the dashing wicketkeeper-batter failed to receive a game as he could not reach his destination on time.

When MS Dhoni missed Duleep Trophy match

Back in 2001, MS Dhoni was assigned a spot in East Zone for the Duleep Trophy season. As reported by various media outlets, the cricketer did not receive the news of his selection on time. When he eventually decided to drive to the stadium in time for the tournament, Dhoni’s car apparently broke down, thus prompting him to miss his breakthrough games.

MS Dhoni eventually made his Duleep Trophy debut in 2004, and received his maiden international cap later that same year for Team India. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter was appointed as India’s captain in mid-2007, where he guided the team to 2007 T20 World Cup glory.

Dhoni recently represented the CSK franchise in the IPL 2024 season, albeit as a player. Mere days prior to the launch of the tournament, he relinquished his captaincy role in favor of rising star Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Throughout his competitive journey, MS Dhoni played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20I matches for Team India. He led the Indian team to three ICC trophies as well as guided them to number one rankings in Test cricket. Moreover, Dhoni also lifted the coveted IPL trophy five times as CSK captain.
