On a special day in October 2016, something beautiful happened on the cricket field. While playing the last ODI match against New Zealand, Indian players took to the field wearing jerseys that were not displaying their own names. Instead, each jersey had one very special name, their mother's.
The world celebrated Mother’s Day on May 11, 2025, across the world. While everybody has their distinct way of paying tribute to their mothers, the Indian cricket team found a unique way to honour their moms on the cricket field.
Team India Wore Special Jerseys As A Tribute To Mothers
Earlier in 2016, India had played an ODI series against New Zealand. In the final ODI, the men in blue asserted their dominance by winning the match by 190 runs. However, more than the win itself, what fans cherished most was a heartwarming gesture.
All Indian players walked out with special jerseys that had their mother’s name imprinted on the back. The idea was simple but meaningful: to honour the mothers who helped shape these cricketers' lives.
Mothers, who often stay behind the scenes, were finally put in the spotlight. From MS Dhoni’s mother, Devaki, to Virat Kohli’s mother, Saroj, and Ajinkya Rahane’s mother, Sujata, these women’s names proudly replaced the cricketers’ surnames on national TV.
MS Dhoni, then the captain of Team India, explained the thought behind the move. He said that they’re used to wearing their fathers’ names, but the mothers play just as important a role. This gesture was to show their love and respect for them.

The former captain also urged fans to appreciate their mothers every day, not just on special occasions.
This year as well, cricketers have wished their moms on Mother's Day through heartwarming messages and tributes across social media platforms. Moreover, since IPL 2025 is suspended due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, the players returned home earlier this week.
