Former India batter Gautam Gambhir has given a blunt word on KL Rahul, who is currently going through a lean patch, stating the Karnataka batter might find it difficult to make it to the playing XI of India going forward.

Rahul's form has been questioned since his comeback from injury in Asia Cup 2022. The Indian opener did not have a good time with the bat in the latest edition of the T20 World Cup played in Australia earlier this year.

Ishan Kishan, who was given a chance to open the innings for India in the absence of Rohit Sharma in the third ODI afainst Bangladesh made a quick impact by smashing the fastest-ever double ODI century from just 126 balls.

In an interaction with Star Sports, Gambhir shed light on the same and reckoned that Ishan Kishan's current form and the recent rise in white-ball cricket have further made things difficult for KL Rahul.

"Probably, KL Rahul might find it difficult to make it in the scheme of things, with the kind of form Ishan Kishan is in."

For the uninitiated, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli have not been named in the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka. The BCCI has appointed Hardik Pandya as the captain who will lead a younger squad against the Islanders.

Gambhir further added that if the management wants to persist with KL Rahul in T20Is, they need to bat him in the top order with Virat Kohli batting at number 3.

"If you want to continue with KL Rahul, you will have to make him bat at the top of the order and Kohli at No.3."

Gambhir added:

"More importantly, if this young side, that the selectors have picked starts doing really well, it is going to be unfortunate for all these youngsters to miss out on that big event."
