Marco Jansen and Kyle Verreynne shattered a 112-year-old record on the opening day of the ongoing second Test between Australia and South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday, December 26.

The Proteas duo put on a crucial partnership worth 112 runs for the sixth wicket and helped South Africa avoid a dreadful collapse. It was South Africa’s highest sixth-wicket stand in Tests at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Jansen and Verreynne went past Aubrey Faulkner and Tip Snooke’s 90-run partnership, which they scored back in December 1910. While Verreynne scored 52, Jansen contributed 59 runs in the record partnership.

South Africa was in a spot of bother after Australia put them to bat first at the iconic MCG. They were languishing at 67 for the loss of five wickets in 28.3 overs when Jansen and Verreynne joined hands and put on a record partnership.

Later, both were dismissed by Cameron Green as South Africa was bundled out for 189 runs in 68.4 overs. Australia's young all-rounder Green was the chief architect of the damage done to Proteas as he picked up a five-wicket haul.

Apart from Green, Mitchell Starc scalped two wickets while Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon got a scalp each. Australia is currently trailing by 157 runs with one wicket down. They won the opening Test at Brisbane and will love to take an unassailable lead by winning the Boxing Day Test as well.
