Jos Buttler departed back to the pavilion without a score in match number 23 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The Englishman was castled by Indian speedster Mohammed Shami in just the third over of the run-chase, as Rajasthan Royals descend further at 4-2 in 2.5 overs.

Notably, Buttler’s scoreless dismissal marked only the second duck of his IPL career, and his first since the 2016 edition of the tournament.

Jos Buttler registers first duck in 85 IPL innings

Jos Buttler made his IPL debut back in 2016 for the Mumbai Indians. The cricketer spent two years at the franchise, before finding an extended run in 2018 for the Rajasthan Royals. In the 2022 edition, i.e., last year, the dynamic batter won the ‘Orange Cap’ award for his batting blitzkriegs.

He bludgeoned 863 runs across 17 matches throughout the season, with four tons and four half-centuries to his name.

The Rajasthan Royals opener carried his fine IPL tune with the bat this time around as well, as he piled up three fifty-plus scores for his side in their first four games of the season.

However, the 33-year-old sustained a rare failure in his team’s away fixture against defending champions Gujarat Titans, as he was cleaned bowled by seasoned pacer Mohammed Shami.

In a bid to keep up with the asking rate, Buttler attempted to scoop over fine leg, only to find his off-stump shattered by a charging Shami.

The last time the Royals opener returned with an IPL duck was 85 innings ago back in 2016, when he was representing the Mumbai Indians in a game against the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants.
