Adding to England's woes in the ICC World Cup 2023, they suffered their fourth defeat as Sri Lanka triumphed with an eight-wicket victory at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Thursday, October 26.

England's batting performance was nothing short of an embarrassment, as they were bowled out for just 156 runs. This dismal display followed their captain Jos Buttler's decision to bat first on a track known for favouring batters.

Later, Sri Lanka chased down the target in just 24.5 overs without breaking a sweat. Following the defeat, Captain Jos Buttler appeared visibly disheartened during the post-match press conference.

The wicket-keeper batter expressed his disappointment by stating that no team becomes subpar overnight, and the overall team's underperformance has fallen short of expectations and the standards they have set.

Here’s what Jos Buttler had said:

“It's incredibly tough. As a captain you feel that a lot - disappointed with myself and the boys that we've not shown our best. We're playing a long way short of our best. There's a lot of really experienced cricketers in the room. You don't become a bad team overnight. That's the frustration. We've been so far short of our best, and there's no particular reason.”

Jos Buttler went on to highlight a series of unfortunate errors made by the team and specifically mentioned the unfortunate run-out of Joe Root during the match. He lamented that they have faltered in executing fundamental skills with both bat and ball and failed to put on partnerships.

“We've been short of our standards. Lots of the dismissals - Root's run out - you don't see that kind of mistakes from us. Haven't been building partnerships. Not doing the basic things well with both bat and ball. The biggest thing is personal pride. The standards we set for ourselves. Rest of the matches we want to get back to playing good cricket. Whatever will be will be.”

England's standing on the points table has plummeted, and they now find themselves in the second-to-last position, having managed only one win in five matches. Their next encounter is with the table-topping India on October 29 at Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, Lucknow.
