Royal Challengers Bangalore, head coach, Sanjay Bangar, has recently shared his perspective on the impact player rule that has been introduced for the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League.

As per the newly introduced impact player rule, teams will have the opportunity to make one substitution to their playing XI by selecting one of the four additional players they name after the toss. If a team has chosen less than the maximum of four overseas players in their playing XI, then the impact player can be an overseas candidate.

However, if a team has already selected four foreign players in their playing XI, they will not be permitted to swap an overseas impact player with another overseas player. In this situation, the team will have to bring in an Indian player as their impact substitute.

Bangar believes that the rule will lead to a scenario where 12 players are playing against 12 players because teams will want their specialized players to take up batting or bowling positions.

“From now on, I believe it is going to be 12 players playing against 12 players. because most teams will want their specialists to occupy their batting or bowling slots," said Bangar in a video posted by RCB on Twitter.

The veteran coach also stated that players in lower positions, such as No.7, may find it challenging to contribute in both departments, and their spot may be taken by a specialist batter or bowler.

"So, it is going to be a little bit more difficult for players to contribute in both departments, especially lower down the order at No.7, they may not get utilized that much. Their spot may go to the specialist batter or bowler," added the RCB coach.

Furthermore, in order to implement the impact player rule, teams will now have to disclose their playing XI only after the toss has taken place. Captains will be allowed to make modifications to their decided playing XI based on the result of the toss.

This means that captains will be carrying two different team sheets while walking out to the toss and will decide on the final playing XI only after they get to know whether they are batting or fielding first.

Speaking on the same, the 50-year old noted that he would have found it more captivating if the concept of the toss rule was not introduced, as it diminishes the excitement of strategizing how teams will utilize the impact substitute.

RCB will kick off their IPL 2023 campaign against Mumbai Indians on April 2 in Bengaluru.
