Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja recently expressed his amazement at the news of Shreyas Iyer's back injury, which may prevent the Indian cricketer from participating in upcoming matches, including the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship Final.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Jadeja remarked that during his playing days, he had not witnessed such a high incidence of back injuries among batters.

The erstwhile cricketer was surprised to learn that Iyer may need surgery and be out of action for three months due to a back injury. He added that he had never heard of a batter needing back surgery before, and questioned the prevalence of such injuries among batsmen.

“For three months? This is also something new I am hearing. Injuries happen all the time but back surgery for a batter? This is something I have never heard before. Even batsmen are having back surgeries?” said Jadeja.

The 52-year-old also emphasized the importance of being mindful of the activities surrounding cricket and taking steps to prevent injuries. He elaborated on this point by noting that the sport of cricket is associated with certain physical activities that may be advantageous, such as weightlifting.

However, the former all-rounder also acknowledged that such activities may come with risks, and players need to be mindful of these potential dangers. He also hoped for Iyer's speedy recovery, adding, "Hope he gets well."

Kolkata Knight Riders, who are set to be a part of IPL 2023, may need to find a replacement captain if Iyer is unable to play. An official update on the Mumbai-born cricketer’s condition is expected soon.
