Shubman Gill hammered an undefeated 104 against RCB in the final league match of the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The knock, marking his second successive ton, was also his third 90-plus score in the past four innings of this tournament.

Remarkably, Gill’s sublime match-winning effort orchestrated a dramatic win for table-toppers Gujarat Titans in front of a packed Chinnaswamy crowd in Bengaluru. Catapulting himself to 680 runs this season, he is just a half-century away from current Orange Cap holder Faf du Plessis.

Remarkably, the innings also helped the youngster in scaling a new height in T20 cricket, as he joins a rare batting club featuring the likes of Babar Azam and Ishan Kishan for an illustrious record.

Shubman Gill dethrones Pakistani duo for a T20 record

Shubman Gill, who made his T20 debut with an IPL game back in 2018, has so far played 115 T20 matches in his career. He turned up for his IPL franchises in 88 of them, having represented the KKR since 2018 before shifting bases to IPL 2022 debutant Gujarat Titans the same year.

Piling up over 3,000 runs in the format, he has registered 25 scores of 50 or more in his journey so far, with a career-best 126* for India being one of his four T20 tons. With another 21 half-centuries to his name, Gill has now become the youngest player in history to complete 50-plus scores 25 times in T20 cricket.

At the age of 23 years and 255 days, he surpassed the previous record holder Ahmed Shehzad, who had achieved the same at a little above 24 years of age. The Pakistani batter is followed by another Pakistani, as current national skipper Babar Azam raced to 25 fifty-plus scores at the age of 24 years and 135 days.

New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips has now dropped to fourth on the list while Mumbai Indians star opener Ishan Kishan reached the landmark at 24 years and 272 days.

Gill will now turn up for the Titans in their upcoming Qualifier 1 clash against CSK on May 23. The match will be played at Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
