Sanju Samson's RR beat CSK last evening [Source: Twitter]
Rajasthan Royals (RR) might have gotten over the finish line last evening and won a close encounter against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), but skipper Sanju Samson did not have a great night personally. Samson has now been fined INR 12 Lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate against MS Dhoni-led CSK at Chepauk in Match 17 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.
A statement from the IPL explained that due to this being the Royals' first offence as a team this season, Samson has been fined with minimum charges. Sandeep Sharma's last-over brilliance stopped MS Dhoni from taking the match away from RR, managing to defend 21 runs.
Samson scored a two-ball duck in the match; his second consecutive zero.
Here's what IPL statement said
"As it was the team's first offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, captain Sanju Samson was fined Rs 12 lakhs,"
This is not the first time this season that a captain has been reprimanded for slow over-rate. Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis was also fined INR 12 Lakh for committing the same offence against the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday in their last-ball loss.
Several matches this season have exceeded the four-hour mark. Recently, even Jos Buttler questioned the time management system and posted it on his Twitter handle.
