I just think that the ship has well and truly sailed: Steve Harmison on Alex Hales' England WC chances

Former England pacer Steve Harmison believes that Alex Hales won't be traveling to India for the upcoming ICC World Cup this year with the defending champion squad. Hales made a phenomenal comeback into international cricket last year, scoring 212 runs in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, which England won.

Harmison stated that Hales has been in the mould of a T20 player lately, and the 50-overs boat has sailed well past him.

Hales last played an ODI for the Three Lions back in 2019, before being dropped on trust issues by the then-England skipper Eoin Morgan just ahead of the World Cup.

"I don't see Alex Hales going to India, no. I think Alex is very much in the T20 mode, franchise cricket, T20, The Hundred. I'd be very surprised if England brought him back for the 50 over competition, not that he's not good enough, I just think that the ship has well and truly sailed.

The 44-year-old further explained that with players like Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, and Dawid Malan in the top order, Hales' return would be difficult.

However, Harmison did back Will Jacks to be included in the squad if England needed to play an extra spinner.
