The Delhi Capitals had their newfound winning momentum disrupted by the SRH in match number 40 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The David Warner-led side fell nine runs short of their target against the ‘Orange Army’, as they slumped to their sixth defeat of the tournament in just their eighth game.

As per Harbhajan Singh, the Capitals would have lost the contest by an even bigger margin if Warner was not dismissed for a duck within their opening over. The legendary spinner claimed that his low batting strike-rate has been one of the reasons for Capitals’ disastrous performance this season so far.

Harbhajan Singh slams David Warner for flop show

Chasing 198, the Delhi Capitals lost captain and opening batter David Warner for a two-ball duck within the opening over. Thereafter, Phil Salt and Mitchell Marsh formed a 112-run second-wicket stand, before a semi batting collapse undid their efforts.

Axar Patel’s late surge lifted the Capitals up to 188 at the end, which still kept them nine runs away from their target.

After the match, cricketer-turned-commentator Harbhajan Singh slammed Warner for his horrid season with the bat, and cited his captaincy as one of the reasons for his team’s downfall this year.

He even claimed that the Capitals would have lost their latest fixture to SRH by more than fifty runs if Warner had ended up playing more than 50 balls in the run-chase. He said:

“I don't think they can make a comeback, and the entire reason for that is captain. He didn't lead the side well, and then his form was an issue. It has been very disappointing. Warner was dismissed earlier today, which is why Delhi came so close. If he had played 50 balls, that would've been 50 balls wasted and DC would've lost by 50 runs.”

While Warner has scored over 300 runs for his side so far this season, he has achieved the same with a strike-rate of just 118.60.

The Australian veteran will now lead the Capitals in their subsequent fixture, i.e., an away game against Gujarat Titans on May 2.
