Glenn Maxwell's place in Australia's T20 World Cup team in doubt: Mark Waugh

With the T20 World Cup 2022 fast approaching, every team across the globe will be looking to get their affairs in order and put forward a side capable of winning the prestigious event.

While teams like India will have breathed a sigh of relief in recent months after the return of key players like Virat Kohli to form, hosts Australia are stuck in a conundrum.

Star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is in a rut right now and the Aussies will have to think long and hard whether the 33-year-old should be a guaranteed starter for them.

The experienced Victorian is widely regarded as one of the most explosive batters in the shortest format and he is the kind of asset that can win games all by himself. Going into a major tournament without a player like him can set the alarm bells ringing, but the truth is that there are others who are more deserving of a place in the lineup on the back of better performances.

Maxwell has scored just 16 runs in his last six T20 internationals and that is simply not good enough.

That said, Maxwell is a player with proven pedigree of performing in big games and he could well step up for his side when it matters most.

Mark Waugh reflects on Maxwell's slump

"It's a real worry for Maxwell's form leading into this World Cup.

"Maybe he's not a lock in the team. (You) would have thought he would be, given the way he fields and his bowling. But he's there to bat at No. 4 primarily. (It'll be) interesting to see what happens going forward there," as quoted by Daily Mail.
