Indian batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara, shared his excitement about playing alongside former Australian skipper Steve Smith for Sussex in the County Championship. This dynamic duo is set to make their debut as teammates, and Pujara could not contain his anticipation for the upcoming challenge.

The Indian batter, who had a break post the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, took the opportunity to join Sussex and enhance his skills in English conditions. He recently displayed his prowess with a splendid 151 in Sussex's draw against Gloucestershire.

Pujara expressed his eagerness to play alongside Steve Smith for the first time, as they have mostly been opponents in the past. He described the opportunity as exciting and expressed his intention to learn more about Smith's thoughts and get to know him better.

"We have spoken, but most of the time we have played against each other. It is never for the same team, so it will be exciting and I will try and get his thoughts, try and know him a little better,” said Pujara.

However, Pujara further admitted to having mixed feelings about playing against Smith in the upcoming WTC final. Despite the on-field battles they have had, the 35-year-old stated that they share a good friendship off the field.

“We will be playing WTC final (against each other), so it will be mixed feelings. On the field we always have good battles, but off the field we are good friends,” added the Indian batting mainstay in Tests.

The Indian veteran went on to reckon that the Australian stalwart’s presence is a valuable asset to the team as he can influence and inspire the players. He also added that players are eagerly anticipating his arrival and are looking forward to learning from him, especially his approach and preparation, as he has extensive experience.

As both Pujara and Smith are pivotal players for their respective national teams, their presence is sure to bring success to Sussex in the upcoming matches.

It will be fascinating to see how they perform together, with Smith expected to be available for Sussex's next contest against Worcestershire from May 4 onwards.
