The ongoing Boxing Day Test between Australia and South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) witnessed David Warner create history and shatter multiple records on Day 2. Playing his 100th Test for Australia, Warner became only the second batter after England's Joe Root to slam a double-ton in their centenary match.
Root's double ton in his 100th Test came against India at Chennai in 2021, during England's disastrous tour. However, Warner retired hurt on 200* after struggling with exhaustion during most of the final session.
This was the left-handed opener's third double hundred in red-ball cricket.
Warner also equalled West Indies Gordon Greenidge's record of becoming only the second player to score century in their 100th Test and ODI.
Earlier in the day, Warner became the eight Australian batter to breach 8,000 Test run-mark. Ahead of the second Test, the 35-year-old was under fire for his lack of runs at the top-order, having gone century-less since last three-years.
Warner's 45 international hundreds as an opener puts him level with India's Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 45 out the 100 centuries in the opening position.
As of writing Australia are 355 for 3, with Cameron Green and Travis Head batting 0* and 33*, respectively in response to South Africa's 189 all-out.
