Sometimes life tests patience, and sometimes Test cricket becomes a way of that. And when it comes to rivalries that ignite magic and madness, none in the cricketing world comes close to the timeless drama of the Ashes.
Every time England and Australia clash on the big stage, an unseen spark of the fire ignites when every ball hits the bat. While batters and bowlers have long stolen the spotlight, the Ashes have also witnessed untold heroics from wicketkeeper-batters. From sharp work behind the stumps to crucial runs with the bat, they got it all covered whenever needed.
In historic Ashes, the cricket world experienced some of the exceptional centuries when the batters’ heroics stunned them. Yet despite the rivalry dating back to 1882, it wasn’t until the 1993 Ashes that Australia saw its first wicketkeeper-batter score a century in the iconic series. Let’s explore who the legendary batter is.
The Aussie gloveman who made Ashes history with a hundred
With the soaring excitement of ODIs and the unreal thrills of T20s, rivalries take dramatic turns, but this rivalry was born in the backyard of the longest format when limited-overs cricket was not even in sight. The historic Ashes, the red-ball battle between England and Australia, was first played in 1882, and the first ever clash planted a seed of the biggest rivalry of the format.
Since the first ever Test match of the rivalry to the latest, the red-ball series never failed to deliver a thrilling moment. While breathtaking bowling spells and memorable knocks stole the limelight, wicketkeepers often remained the unsung heroes. In the rich history of the rivalry, some of the wicketkeepers carved their own legacy.
Wicketkeeper-batters produced moments of sheer brilliance over the years, yet Australia had to wait until 1993 for its first century from a gloveman in the Ashes. As the Aussies travelled to their rival last during the Ashes 1993, Ian Healy became the first-ever Aussie wicketkeeper-batter to score a hundred in the historic Test series.
Ian Healy’s gritty hundred powers Australia to a dominant win
Whenever England and Australia meet on the big stage, thrills follow their way, but during the Ashes 1993, Manchester recorded a history of the Australian side. Chasing glory on home soil is okay, but dazzling on rivals’ soil is glorious, and Ian Healy lived on that moment.
Facing England on their home soil, Australia scored 289 runs, and England replied with 210 runs in their first innings. With a 79-run lead, they returned to bat in the second innings, and history was awaiting them. After losing two wickets in 46 runs, they fought back with a mighty partnership between David Boon and Mark Waugh.
Coming to bat at the seventh position, Ian Healy walked out to bat and stitched a crucial partnership with Steve Waugh. Taking the English bowlers on a swing, Healy tore them apart. Pushing Australia towards a great total, he smashed a dominating half-century.
Channeling his destructive best, he swung freely as England’s bowlers endured a nightmare against rampant Australian dominance in their own backyard. Adding more dent to the opponent, he smashed an amazing hundred. The hundred helped the Aussies to declare their innings in 432/5.
Being unbeaten on 102 runs, it was just not a regular Test century, as Australia needed to wait for an entire century to crown the first Australian wicketkeeper-batter who scored a century in the Ashes. From Ian Healy’s historic hundred to Alex Carey’s recent Ashes 2025 century, many chapters have turned, but the first still holds a special place in history.
