What drives Ganguly to embrace the new role
Even after hanging up his boots from the game, Sourav Ganguly didn’t leave the game for a while. From administrator to mentor, he kept serving Indian cricket with all his excellence. Just a few years back, the Indian cricket team welcomed a new tournament called the Indian Street Premier League, and the entire nation lived in nostalgia of the tennis-ball cricket.
Starting his new innings, Sourav Ganguly took charge as the co-owner and the ambassador of the Tiigers of Kolkata. In a chat with the Times of India, he revealed what drew him to the role and praised the tournament as a massive platform for young talents to shine on the big stage.
“I’ve watched this tournament for the last three years on TV, and you must give a lot of credit to Suraj Samat (ISPL League Commissioner) for organising this and creating a platform for young players to play,” he said.
“You know how big cricket is in India. There is so much happening all around the country in terms of the states, districts, universities. Everybody wants to play the game. Not everybody gets an opportunity at the state level because you get selected, scrutinised, and then given an opportunity to play at the top. But what this does is…gives everybody a chance to showcase their talent. I think that’s the reason we are all attached to it,” he added.
Ganguly talks about Tiigers’ future plan
In his playing days, Sourav Ganguly always led Team India towards something new. As he is set to start the new journey, the world is expecting the same from him. Speaking about the future plan of his team, he confirmed that backing young talent to take center stage will be their top priority.
“It already has a massive reach. And if you look at the numbers, which are still generated for the last few years, from which they get players and bring them to the auction to give them the opportunity to play matches. And then from there, select the best to be on the main team during the tournament, which goes on for a month. So, they have a reach in any case. And hopefully, it will prompt young players to keep playing in the days to come.
After two successful seasons of the Indian Street Premier League, the tournament is set to return with another thrilling season. As the next edition is set to start from January 9, 2026, fans are excitement some tennis-ball thrills.
