One of the most explosive batters in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Punjab Kings' (PBKS) Jitesh Sharma has been named in India's squad for the upcoming Asian Games 2023, which will happen in Hangzhou, China.
The matches will be played between September 23 and October 8, which will clash with the opening round matches of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.
Asian Games 2023 will be Jitesh's second call-up for Team India after his selection as a replacement for Sanju Samson during T20Is against Sri Lanka in January this year. Now, Sharma in a conversation with News18, revealed what advice did head coach Rahul Dravid give the Vidharbha-batter during his time with Team India.
The wicket-keeper batter stated that Dravid asked the 29-year-old to continue batting in a similar fashion and that India needs such players.
Here's what Sharma said
"Yes, I had discussions with Rahul (Dravid) sir, when I was selected during the home season a few months back. He said ‘Jaise batting kar rahein ho, waise hi karte raho. Aur yehi dekh rahe hain hum future ke liye. Humein aise players hi chahiye is position ke liye.’ (The way you are batting, continue in the same vein. We are specifically looking for players like these for certain batting positions (No 5 and 6)."
Sharma in IPL 2023 for PBKS, played the role of a finisher and excelled, scoring 309 runs at a strike rate of 156.06. Overall, in 90 T20 matches, Sharma has scored 2,096 runs with one hundred and nine half-centuries.
Taking about Asian Game 2023, India will be captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad and see several young faces in the squad.
