Former India U19 fast bowler Akash Singh has been signed by the Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for injured left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary, just before their season opener against Gujarat Titans on March 31.  Mukesh is unable to participate in the tournament due to a stress fracture and is currently in the process of recovery.

Akash's impressive performance in handling the new ball for India during the 2020 U19 World Cup in South Africa caught the attention of the Super Kings, as he picked up seven wickets in six matches at an economy rate of 3.81 and an average of 22.00 while bowling alongside Sushant Mishra and Kartik Tyagi.

Although Akash had previously been in the Rajasthan Royals' squad, he underwent a dry spell and didn't get a chance to play in the last season. Despite his youth, he has demonstrated considerable potential in his career so far and will be eager to get some game time in the upcoming season while playing for the Super Kings.

Considering that they will be playing at their home ground, the spin-friendly Chepauk, the Chennai Super Kings appear to have a fairly strong team for this season.

They have a number of world-class spinners, including Maheesh Theekshana, Moeen Ali, Mitchell Santner, and Ravindra Jadeja, among others, which should make things easier for skipper MS Dhoni during the middle overs. However, they may struggle during the death overs, as they do not have a good death bowler in their squad, this is where Akash Singh might prove to be fruitful as with Ben Stokes unlikely to bowl, this could affect the Super Kings' chances in the long run.
